Beginning of the journey

The journey began on an exciting note as the topic of genetics was chosen for its challenging content for inquiry. Students chose to bring in their own set of questions that they wanted to inquire about. They also wrote their prior understanding about the topic which would aid in guiding their learning better.

The group members decided on the group name ‘PowerGenIes’ after a collective response. They drew their own logos in pairs and decided on the final logo after brainstorming about its content.

The final Central Idea for the unit was drafted after engaging in Think-Pair-Share strategy and collaboration which is : ‘Genetics helps us to understand change in life.’

Key concepts chosen were:

Form

Connection

Change

Lines of Inquiry:

Structures responsible for characteristics in living organisms (Form)

Transmission of characteristics to the new generation (Connection)

Role of environment in bringing variation in characteristics (Change)

The choices of primary and secondary resources were noted in the resource section of the PYP exhibition journal. The group members also saw videos about the cell structure (position of nucleus) and chromosomes. (Links below)

They also shared their research work on chromosomes and appearance of genetic material in a cell. They are now looking forward to find out about the structure of DNA.
