The week began with a discussion of the mind maps about the structure of DNA, that were created as part of our home assignment. We also brainstormed on possibilities of constructing a 3-D model of DNA’s structure, preferably using readily available materials.
We analyzed the structure of DNA as being a double helix and made up of repeating units called as ‘nucleotide’. This further enhanced our clarity about overall features of its structure and its position in the living organism, studying our perspective from a macro level to micro level.
Based on our understanding of the first Line of Inquiry, we filled up a Lynn Concept Map. We also enlisted tools for assessment for a Formative assessment and voted for the final choice.

Later on in the week, we had the opportunity to conduct a Flipped classroom on the second Line of Inquiry based on the following questions:
1) How are characteristics transferred to new generations?
2) Why do you think are they transferred?
3) When are they transferred to a new generation?
The session led to formulation of few questions regarding how characteristics are passed down from parent to the offspring and how are they expressed in the new individual.
This activity also led to guided discussions on Gregor Mendel who discovered the rules in passing down of characteristics by carrying out experiments with pea plants - which we understood as ‘inheritance’.
We watched videos on the same concept and learnt about a natural law that holds true for handing down of characteristics in living organisms.(Links below)
Integration with Math – We have started learning about the Punnett Square as a tool to find out the possibility of an offspring getting a particular feature from its parents. We realized that it involved our application of fraction and percentages.(Link below)
The unit has enabled us to get acquainted with new scientific vocabulary which we are glad to note down in our unit-dictionary.
We are now looking at sharing our findings about the assignment on Punnett square next week.
